website design cms
How do you begin to build and publish a website without using a CMS like Wordpress or Drupal?

I know a little bit about web design, but I have to admit I’m a beginner at this sort of stuff. I’m just curious at how one would go about building a website from scratch using strictly CSS and HTML without having to deal with the PHP involved? What tools would I need to use?

All you really need in this case is a web server to host things on, something to upload the html and css files with to that said web server and something to edit those files.

Theres many programs,

http://filezilla-project.org/ is among the best freeware FTP upload/downloaders

As for editing the html files, you could use Eclipse, Editplus(my personal fav), Notepad++(freeware) or even just Windows’ own notepad.

Simply create the files on your computer using an editor like i mentioned above and then upload to the web server.

Edit:

I’ll elaborate a bit more to help you since Yahoo Answers isn’t a talk back and forth type deal. I use Editplus, it isn’t free, but you can use it forever and all you are bothered with is a small nag screen when first starting the program.

The reason I use Editplus is because it has the FTP upload/download ability built right in, so there is no need to save the html/css file then switch to Filezilla and upload it. Whenever you hit save, it automatically uploads the file directly to the web server and you can see it live.

This is my setup of editplus:
Tools -> Preferences -> Files
– Uncheck “Create backup file when saving”
– click on “Backup options…” button and uncheck “Create backup file of remote file in backup directory”

File -> FTP -> FTP Settings -> Add button
– Give it a name
– Description, ftp server, username and password and click OK

On default install there will be a sidebar on the left, at the top will be 2 tabs, ignore Cliptext, all we care about is Directory.

Below those tabs will be a dropdown box, this is how you navigate to the FTP server you just input. Use that dropdown box, select the FTP server and now the large white box below that should have changed to show the folders on your webserver and the box below that one will show files within that folder.

Right clicking the bottom box gives you the ability to create new files (e.g. index.html) and right clicking the top box lets you create folders.

That is basically how to use Editplus for simple html/css editing and creation. If you need to upload images and such i suggest you use Filezilla for that.
