How to start website, with own domain name? *New to this*?

I have been creating websites on geocities for YEARS, and find it to be a fun hobby. =) But.. I am interested in buying a domain name (maybe from Godaddy?) and starting my own website..

I’d like to start a small website design business – and I already know Geocities would not allow this. And even if they did, it wouldn’t look “professional” enough.

Questions –
How do I get started?
Is it very much different from working with Geocities?
If I buy a domain name from Godaddy, do I still have to pay a hosting service monthly?
Any advice?

Yes, I am already familiar with HTML.
I am just “lost” when it comes to “hosting” and all the things involved with getting my own domain. lol
